Rabies First Aid Treatment

When bitten by an animal, you should immediately do the first aid treatment whether the animal is rabid or not. You should always care for the wound immediately. First, wash the wound with soap and water for at least 5 - 10 minutes and put some sort of commercial antiseptic iodine solution, if available. With this process, it can help kill the germs that would pass by the bite or even help lessen the likelihood of transmission of rabies virus. Then, immediately send the animal bite victim to the hospital to seek medical treatment from the doctors to get anti-rabies shots.

If the animal is pet, get the name of the owner, address and contact number if possible. This will help the authorities to monitor everything. It is indicated in the Anti-Rabies Act of 2007 (Republic Act 9482) that the owner has big responsibilities and he should be the one to pay for all the medical treatment that the victim have.

What causes rabies?

Rabies is caused by a virus. It is in a saliva of an infected animal. Rabies is commonly found in dogs, cats, bats, raccoons, monkeys and other wildlife animals. In the Philippines, 98% of the animal bites are from dogs and only 2% are from cats.
All warm-blooded animals can get rabies, and some may serve as natural reservoirs of the virus.
