Rabies Outbreak at La Union City

La Union City was under a state of calamity after a record of 95 cases of rabies infection and the death of of two citizen of Bausang, La Union.

According to Provincial agriculturist Avelino Lomboy, the record of rabies infection cases is very high at barangay Central West and Parian West, Bauang.

It reached upto a number of 450 dogs that was vaccinated after having serious and strict rabies campaigns.

Provincial agriculturist Lomboy called out for the national government to produce and supply more anti-rabies vaccine to further support the mass vacination of dogs in the said city.

The Philippines ranked 10 among Asian countries that has high number of rabies infection cases.

Symptoms of rabies on dogs


Symptoms of rabies on dogs includechanges in behvior, too much drooling of the dog, the dog becomes vicious, violent and aggressive, bites anything that it sees or attack other animals or people without provocation, may have paralysis of the limbs or throat and so the dog can hardly eat, or just lay down.

Symptoms of rabies in people


Early symptoms of raibes on human include irritability, headache, fever and someitmes itching and pain at the site of the wound. These early symptoms are rarely diagnostic and as these symptoms show, it would be too late to cure it since rabies has no cure. After the symptoms, the disease eventually progressas to paralysis, spasms of the throat muscles, convulsions, delirium ad eventually leads to death.

What causes rabies?


Rabies is caused by a virus. It is in a saliva of an infected animal. Rabies is commonly found in dogs, cats, bats, raccoons, monkeys and other wildlife animals. In the Philippines, 98% of the animal bites are from dogs and only 2% are from cats.
All warm-blooded animals can get rabies, and some may serve as natural reservoirs of the virus.

Rabies Education

Rabies is one of the most fatal diseases in the world. The Philippines ranked third worldwide in rabies incidence and it remains a public health problem.

According to DOH, rabies incidence in the Philippines has 300-600 deaths per million filipinos per year and 53% of cases are children 5 - 14 years old.

Rabies a fatal viral disease and a very serious infection of the nervous system that is caused by the saliva of an infected animal that is commonly dog. Once the symptom occured on human, there's no other way but pathway to death.

Rabies is characterized by hydrophobia (fear of water), aerophobia (fear of air) muscle spasm and paralysis.

Rabies virus is transmitted to human through bite, scratch and licking of an open wound by an animal.
